Art Dudley – Stereophile Jan 2007 The Pink Link2 is our entry-level (stage 1) modification for the LP12. It delivers these astounding benefits by using the latest technology is design, materials and motors. The complete Pink Link 2 Deluxe kit is: CLARITY top plate The key to the success of Pink Link2 is mounting the K-Drive at the bottom-left (7 o’clock) position of the top plate so that it is in line with the cartridge cantilever – this is the optimal position for minimising the impact of motor pull on a cartridge. The CLARITY top plate is made from a hi-tech aerospace carbon fibre material that effectively prevents external vibration from the plinth being transmitted to the motor, and thereon to the platter.

The Pink Link2 minimises the impact of motor pull on the cartridge. Motor pull arises because the rotating platter is tied, by the belt, to a motor that is anchored to the top plate of the LP12. Not only does this restrict the movement of the platter but it gives it directionality. The motion is now in a straight line from the motor to the platter. Worse, the drive-belt path is perpendicular to the cantilever of the cartridge. This is the worst possible outcome because the motor vibration is acting on the side of the cartridge, causing it to swing from side-to-side in a yo-yo movement. The cartridge can’t distinguish this yo-yo movement from the modulations (the music) contained in the groove walls. The result is audible phase distortion – a lack of pitch stability, colouration, notably bass ‘bloom’, and a loss of detail. The Pink Link2 minimises the impact of motor pull on the cartridge by moving the motor from the 11 o’clock position on the top plate to the 7 o’clock position. Now the drive-belt path is placed in line with the cantilever of the cartridge. It is here that the impact of motor pull is minimised because the cartridge cantilever is least susceptible to vibration in its front-to-back plane of movement. [Note: Even greater improvement is brought by Vector Link because it eliminates the source of the problem. For more information <click here>]. So, you ask, why on earth was the motor positioned at 11 o’clock in the first place? But modern cartridges are far better shielded against mechanical noise, freeing the designer to address the problem of motor pull. Why have other companies not done this? Well, you’d better ask them! .................The Funk Firm........ever closer! Contact | Pricing Info | Dealer List | Fitting Advice (VL) | Sending your LP12 |
